WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Indians varsity baseball team scored what may well have been an unprecedented 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning against the visiting West Perry Mustangs on Thursday at Robinson Field.
It seemed only a matter of time before the game would end by the 15-run rule or the 10-run rule. It was the former, as the Tribe scored four runs in the home fourth to finish off West Perry 18-3 in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division game.
The game was played under sunny skies but a nasty wind, which made the temperature (which was in the upper 50s to low 60s) seem almost winterlike. Unseasonable for the last day of April? But it’s Pennsylvania, and if March can come in and go out like a lion or a lamb, so can April.
The numbers in the first inning were staggering: 17 at-bats, nine hits (including two home runs), and 15 runners on base.
Riley Eaton led off the inning with a single. Jack Eaton belted a home run over the fence in center field. Not to be outdone, Ryan Jenkins, who hit a grand slam during a 4-1 win against Greencastle-Antrim on Tuesday, went yard on the next at-bat to make the score 3-0.
Nate Nystrom walked, Rylan Nichols singled, and after the first out of the inning, Rayshawn Frazer-Hewitt singled to load the bases. Next up was Elijah Miller, who hit a two-run double. Starting pitcher Chance Hall walked, and Eaton walked in his second trip to the plate in the frame. Knepper walked to force Miller home. A pitch hit Jenkins to force in another run. Nystrom then walked to score Eaton. Same for Nichols, whose walked sent Knepper across home plate. Earley singled home Jenkins, and Frazer-Hewitt hit his second base hit of the inning to plate Nystrom.
Hall, who struck out three batters in his brief time on the mound, was replaced by Logan Kennedy with two gone in the top of the second inning. Kennedy walked the first two batters he faced, but he struck out the third hitter to end the inning.
Waynesboro added a run in the second inning, and the Mustangs scored their initial run of the contest in the top of the third.
The Indians posted a run in the third, and after giving up a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, scored four runs in the home fourth to end the game.
Head coach Travis Hardman made wholesale substitutions following the first inning, but Waynesboro’s production – offense, defense, and pitching – did not drop off. Kennedy pitched the third inning and was relieved by Nystrom in the fourth inning.
Zach Bowers, Caiden Shacreaw, Dustin Wagaman, Garrett Scheeler and Nate Wheeler all entered the game in the second inning. Braedon Bowers entered the contest in the third inning.
The game was Waynesboro’s first at home since April 16. The Indians improved to 11-4 and host New Oxford Friday at 4:15 p.m. in a non-conference game.
