Herbst wins two titles as Smithsburg finishes second at CMC meet

SMITHSBURG, Md. – Dylan Herbst won two individual titles to lead host Smithsburg to a runner-up finish in the boys team standings at the Central Maryland Conference Small School Track & Field Championships on Thursday.

Herbst, a junior, captured the 1,600 in 4:32.30 and came back to win the 800 in a personal-best 1:59.13, his first time breaking 2 minutes.

The Walkersville boys won the nine-team meet with 163 1/2 points. Smithsburg finished with 146, and Middletown was third with 111 1/2.

Smithsburg added three more event wins. Michael Wynkoop took the 3,200 (10:08.69), and Cadyn Nesbitt won the pole vault (13-0) and teamed with David Craig, Levi Miller and Jacob Tyler to capture the 4×200 relay (1:32.24).

Washington County boys won four other events. Daniel Apiou captured the triple jump (45-3 1/4) and Brooks Myers won the discus (134-1) for Clear Spring. Austin Dinsmore took the shot put (48-3 1/4), and Boonsboro’s 4×100 relay team of Naythan Bwana, Nikita Khyzhniak, Nathan Bosnick and Wyatt Hegedus won in 45.07.

Brunswick won the girls team title with 133 points. Boonsboro finished second with 104 1/2, and Middletown was third with 93 1/2.

Sarah Mohler was the lone event winner for the runner-up Warriors, taking the discus with a throw of 125-9.

Smithsburg won three events. Lohgan Viar captured the 3,200 (13:20.21), and Acasia Todd, Melyssa Bard, Lilian Hade and Skyla Mastronardi teamed up to win both the 4×100 (50.75) and 4×200 (1:47.94).

For Clear Spring, Alexis Matthews won the triple jump (32-7 1/4).

The CMC large-school meet was canceled Wednesday due to weather.
