WAYNESBORO, Pa. – Rotary club members were treated to an interesting question and answer session with Dr. Francis Achampong, moderated by Dan DeDona. Achampong, a former college professor and administrator, has recently published his first book, “The Christian As Imitator of Christ.”
Achampong said part of his reason for writing the book was observing today’s culture wars and the way many of the participants in those disputes identified themselves with a Christian label. He struggled with whether to write the book as he does not consider himself a theologian but said he reminded himself that some of Jesus’ disciples came from humble beginnings.
The book, which he described as a labor of love, took him five years to finish after its start in 2019.
Achampong said followers of Christ must do more than just believe in Jesus and join a church. They need to become imitators of Christ and try to follow his precepts.
For example, a racist individual would not be a true Christian because Christ himself was not racist. With respect to whether giving to the poor could be construed as handouts, Achampong said there would always be abusers of the system, but we also should come up with ways to help those who truly are in need.
