HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Jackson Coulter did everything to help himself while helping the North Hagerstown baseball team.
Coulter had two hits and four RBIs to help support his five-inning start on the mound on Friday to lift the Hubs to a 14-4 win over Tuscarora in six innings.
North broke a 3-3 tie with a seven-run third inning.
The win allowed the Hubs (6-1) to bounce back from their first loss of the season on Monday.
Coulter moved to 3-0 while allowing three runs and striking out three.
James Ortiz helped back Coulter with three doubles and two RBIs, while scoring a run. Jordan Gingerich drove in four runs with two hits and scored a run and Matt Mallardi had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs with two runs scored and a stolen base.
Eli Brown scored three runs and drove in another.
Boonsboro 4, Smithsburg 3
BOONSBORO, Md. – Boonsboro scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 2-2 and held on for to edge Smithsburg.
The Warriors broke the tie by scoring on an error with Rhett Springer adding the insurance with an RBI groundout.
Of the seven runs scored in the game, only two were earned.
Parker DeBaugh got the win for the Warriors, pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
Boonsboro took a 1-0 lead in the first, scoring on an error.
Smithsburg countered with two runs in the third on a two-run single by Mason Oates. The Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Logan Akinson’s double.
Chase Sarber started for Smithsburg, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts over five innings.
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
South Hagerstown 14, Frederick 1
HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Ja’Seri Chapman went the extra mile – almost literally – to lead South Hagerstown to a five-inning victory.
Chapman went 3-for-3 and stole a career-high five bases to get the Rebels off and running. She scored three runs and drove in one.
It was more than enough for pitcher Raelee Fry to work with in a two-hit, complete-game performance. Fry allowed an unearned run and walked four, but struck out eight. Fry also had a double and a RBI.
South (6-5) scored all its runs in the first three innings, including a seven-run second. The Rebels all but capped the game with a four-run third.
Chelsea Desmond, Kailia Burke and Trianna Williams collected two hits and two RBIs each for the Rebels. Williams had a triple and a double, while Desmond doubled and Burke tripled.
Baylee Hancock also had a double and two RBIs. Kenzie Lamer made her first appearance since undergoing knee surgery and collected am RBI double in her first at-bat.
With the victory, South coach Chelsea Showe moved into a tie for second place on the Rebels all-time wins list, joining former coach Angela Jeffries with 61 wins each.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Shepherd 2-4, Lock Haven 0-1
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University pitcher Madelayne Ruffner collected a win and a save on Friday to pace the Rams in a PSAC East doubleheader sweep of Lock Haven’
Ruffner fired a complete-game two-hit shutout with 16 strikeouts to move her record to 9-7 in the opener. She returned in the nightcap, allowing two hits, but striking out two in two-thirds of an inning in the nightcap to earn her fourth save.
Shepherd (17-17, 12-10) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener when Boonsboro’s Haylee Hartman and first baseman Breanna Collis led off with singles and advanced on a sacrifice before Hartman scored on a wild pitch.
The Rams made it 2-0 in the sixth on a solo home run by Collis, who finished with a 2-for-3 outing.
Williamsport’s Payton Weaver gave Shepherd a 2-0 lead in the second of the nightcap with a two-run double.
Shepherd added two runs in the fourth when pinch hitter Allison Gray and Cate Russian each drove in runs.
Lock Haven (23-15, 13-9) picked up it’s only run in the seventh.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
West Chester 4-7, Shepherd 2-1
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester took care of Shepherd University on Friday with a PSAC East sweep of a doubleheader.
Shepherd (24-15, 11-7) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one when outfielder Bodie Pullen doubled and later scored on first baseman Nik Rubendall’s RBI single.
West Chester (27-8, 12-6) tied the game with a run in the second and took a 3-1 lead in the third on a two-run single from Patrick Gozdan.
The Golden Bears upped the lead to 4-1 in the sixth on a single from Carter Rust.
The Rams scored in the seventh on a solo home run by designated hitter Wyatt Lamb).
Infielder Andrew O’Brien had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap on a solo homer by designated hitter Ryan Fluharty.
West Chester scored seven runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run double from Hunter Smith and a two-run single from Christian Michak.
Fluharty went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.
