LocalNews1 has partnered with The Hagerstown Town and Country Almanack to bring you a story every Monday taken from current or past editions of the Almanack. First published in 1797, it’s the second oldest almanac in the United States and has been in continuous publication for 230 years and is the only almanac in the United States still published by the founders’ direct descendants.
With winter behind us and summer close ahead, it is time to start thinking about going back to the pool and the beach. Over the holidays and during the winter months when people are generally a little less active, it is normal to put on a few of those “winter pounds” and so with some health tips from the 2026 Almanack, you can start shredding that extra weight. Here are some of the suggestions you will find in the Health Tips section.
“Consuming food stored with natural vitamins: Vitamin D and cod liver oil will boost your energy levels if you eat them every day. Get your vitamin D from eggs and mushrooms.”
“Use coconut oil rather than olive oil when frying. Coconut oil has a higher smoke point, the temperature at which potentially toxic compounds form.”
“Eat a handful of olives every day. They act similarly to aspirin in reducing inflammation and artery plaque formation, but they taste way better.”
Those are some of the food tips, but here are some physical activities that a person can do to help them throughout the day. Some of these suggestions are rather inventive.
“Stand on one foot while brushing your teeth. Creating instability will engage your core muscles and give your abs a bonus workout!”
“Choose stairs over escalators: Taking the stairs may only burn 10-15 calories every two minutes, but over the course of a month, this can build up to something significant, not to mention the additional benefit of giving your muscles, heart, and lungs a workout.”
“Meditate daily: Take two minutes every day to sit in silence and concentrate on your breathing. With this mindfulness task, you’ll feel more in tune with your body and start to disconnect from the silliness of life.”
Those are just a few of the health tips and ideas from the The Hagerstown Town and Country Almanack. If you have any health conditions or concerns always check with your physician before changing your eating habits or daily physical routine.LocalNews1 is honored to partner with Gruber’s Hagerstown Town & Country Almanack to bring you the most relevant, timely and informative content about and around Washington and Franklin counties.
